La Roche-sur-Yon - At La Roche-sur-Yon (Vendee), a bust of Simone Veil, a famous politician who died in June 2017, was vandalized.

The bronze statue, located in a square and inaugurated five days ago and dedicated to the former minister, has been covered of a blue paint.

As reported by Ouest France, the town hall of La Roche-sur-Yon has decided to cover the bust with plastic film, pending cleaning by municipal officials. Luc Bouard, the mayor of the city, filed a complaint in the morning of Monday, December 16. "It's a real anger to see this", he says. At France Bleu Loire Ocean, he denounces "the disrespect of this desire to put forward someone who served his country".

For his part, Yvan Mercier, the artist behind the statue, tells Ouest-France to be "very touched" by this act of vandalism. He will help with the restoration of his work. Several Internet users were quick to react, denouncing most of them a "shameful" act.
