Antisemitic Incidents in the Netherlands in 2019

The discrimination against Jews in the Netherlands seems to be increasing considerably. The Jewish documentation center CIDI registered 182 antisemitic incidents last year. That is 35 percent more cases than in 2018. It is the highest number of incidents in the 30 years that these figures are recorded.

The discrimination against Jews in the Netherlands seems to be increasing considerably. The Jewish documentation center CIDI registered 182 antisemitic incidents last year. That is 35 percent more cases than in 2018. It is the highest number of incidents in the 30 years that these figures are recorded.

The number of online incidents of antisemitism is not included in the overview; later this spring, the CIDI will publish a separate investigation into the increase in the number of hate incidents against Jews on social media.

This includes abuse, harassment and physical harassment. The incidents have a major impact on the Jewish community in the Netherlands, the CIDI emphasizes. "They contribute enormously to a growing sense of insecurity," says Deputy Director Naomi Mestrum.

So far, the record number of incidents has been measured in 2014. At that time, there was a clear reason for the increase; the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza flared up that year. Such a connection cannot be identified in 2019, according to Mestrum.
