Far-right activists infiltrate London shul's online service with antisemitic messages

Golders Green, LondonA Friday night service screened online by North Western Reform Synagogue (Alyth) in Golders Green was infiltrated by far-right extremists who wrote antisemitic and racist messages on the official group chat space.

Around 250 members of the congregation were online for the broadcast on Zoom listening to Rabbi Josh Levy’s Kabbalat Shabbat service when the comments, made by up to five individuals, began to appear onscreen.

Messages included tropes about world Jewish domination and a vulgar description of black people using the "N" word and an expletive.

The infiltration of the chat space continued for around five minutes.

Some congregants responded to the stream of racist abuse by the writing on the chat room that they had reported the incidents to the police.

At one stage Rabbi Levy urged congregants to focus on the service rather than on the content of the chat room.

Eventually a decision was taken to shut the chat room down as the service continued.

The JC has spoken to two Alyth members who said they had been left "shocked and upset" by the incident.

One said: ‘Because of the coronavirus pandemic it was a highly emotional and very important service to be able to watch online.

"The last thing I expected to see was extreme racist and antisemitic hate messages appearing on the chat room.

"It was most upsetting, and shocking to watch this going on from the computer in my living room."

The JC has approached Alyth for comment.
