Suspended sentence for assault on Kippah-wearing man in Germany

A 23-year old man who tore a kippah off a 19-year-old’s head in the German city of Freiburg has been given a suspended sentence.

The perpetrator was given a suspended sentence of six months’ by the Freiburg District Court and a fine of 3,000 euros for incitement to hatred and insults, a spokesman for the court confirmed.

The incident took place on November 5, 2019 in a fitness studio in Freiburg. In June 2020, an amendment was adopted to paragraph 46 of the German Criminal Code, which expressly recognises antisemitism as an aggravating circumstance in a criminal offence.
