A student from Chile declared Hitler her “inspirational” and a teacher of Jewish descent denounced her

Santiago - In an open letter to Hugo Frühling, Director of Public Affairs of the University of Chile,  Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and Ariel Gelblung, director of the Wiesenthal Center for Latin America, urged that an exemplary sanction be applied to a student who presented a work where he argued that Adolf Hitler should be inspiration for leadership and the model of a thriving society.

The teacher who should evaluate the work is of Jewish origin and with relatives who were victims of the Holocaust. He informed his superiors that he would not rate the work and raised the matter for consideration by the University authorities.

Immediately, a series of institutions supported the professor’s decision and the University must now evaluate the decision to be made.

Center officials maintained: “It should not be relevant that the teacher in question is of Jewish descent, or that part of his family suffered the Holocaust, but that the basis of the sanction must correlate with the possible lack of historical knowledge of the student or the contrary, with intentionally inflicting pain on her teacher.

The sincere use of the argument of freedom of expression implies that said freedom is for all members of society, not for a self-declared enlightened group that justifies the infringement of the rights of others, among others, to live and consider themselves equally human.

Hate speech, Mr. Director, not to be confused with freedom of expression, and that must be fought in a university setting.

A clear and concrete measure that the University One must take to avoid such issues in the future is to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Practical Definition of Antisemitism.

This step has been successfully taken in Europe and in the region by the National Universities of Cuyo, Tucumán, Buenos Aires and Del Litoral, among others in Argentina. To date, these institutions have already put it into practice to prevent and punish similar situations.. “

Lastly, Drs. Samuels and Gelblung or They gave the University the full cooperation of the Wiesenthal Center.
