2020 Antisemitism report in Ukraine

The United Jewish Community of Ukraine publishes the report "Antisemitism in Ukraine - 2020".

The report describes 49 cases of antisemitism in Ukraine in 2020, as well as cases that could be perceived as antisemitism, but were not.

Given that the total number of cases of antisemitism in 2020 is insignificant, a decrease in their number, compared to 2019, by 12% (-5) is considered an error.

The United Jewish Community of Ukraine says the level of anti-Semitism in Ukraine has remained unchanged.

The share of domestic cases of antisemitism did not increase even taking into account the tension in the world around the COVID-19 pandemic and the social tension around the pilgrimage of the Bratslav Hasidim, created by the ex-mayor of Uman for political reasons. Although, after the provocative statements of the mayor, there is a tendentiousness in everyday cases in July.

At the same time, the number of manifestations of antisemitism on social networks increased and there were five cases of physical violence: in Vinnitsa, Mariupol, two in Uman and another near Berdyansk.

There are positive trends in the absence of apparently ordered incidents related to political issues, as was the case last year on the topic of land sales. But there is a negative tendency, according to which attacks were made on synagogues in Vinnitsa and Mariupol, as well as an attempt was made to set fire to a synagogue in Kherson. It is worth noting that there were no such cases in 2019.
