Hundreds show solidarity with Gil Ofarim in Leipzig

Leipzig
– Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Westin Hotel in the evening after accusations of antisemitism Leipzig gathered.

The participants want to show their solidarity with the musician Gil Ofarim (39) and Jews in Germany. The alliance called for “Leipzig takes a seat”.

The police initially estimated the number of participants in the “middle three-digit range”, as a spokeswoman said. There is talk of 600 people on site on social media.

Ofarim said he was the victim of an antisemitic incident in the Leipzig hotel on Monday.

The singer reported visibly moved in an Instagram video published on Tuesday that an employee of the Westin Leipzig had asked him at reception to pack his Star of David. Then he can check in.

Irena Rudolph-Kokot from “Leipzig takes a seat” said at the rally that the antisemitic incident was extremely angry and should not go unchallenged. “We show solidarity with all Jews to whom this still happens far too often in Germany,” she said.

In addition to the hundreds of participants from civil society, employees of the hotel also took part in the rally. They held up a banner in front of the hotel entrance with the flag of Israel on it.
