Italy - Guidelines against antisemitism in schools presented to the Ministry of Education

The Guidelines against antisemitism in schools were illustrated this afternoon at the headquarters of the Ministry of Education, in the presence of Minister Patrizio Bianchi, and will be sent to schools in the next few days with a circular.

The Guidelines are the result of the initiative of the National Coordinator for the fight against antisemitism at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Milena Santerini, who led the work of a joint technical-scientific committee at the Ministry, in the context of a Memorandum of Understanding signed last January 27 between the Ministry of Education, National Coordinator for the fight against antisemitism and UCEI (Union of Italian Jewish Communities).

The document, based on the work carried out in recent years by Italian schools to preserve and transmit the memory of the Shoah, aims to address prejudices and new forms of antisemitism among young people in a current key, opening a reflection with teachers, female students on the prevention and contrast of this phenomenon.

“At school, we remember. And at school, together, starting from the analysis of the past, a present and a future of peace are built, starting from respect for the other ”, underlined Minister Patrizio Bianchi. “These Guidelines are part of a long journey that the Italian school has been doing for some time on these issues. Path that is now enriched with a new precious tool".

“These Guidelines can help teachers to face old and new prejudices that weaken coexistence at school and in society,” explained Milena Santerini.

The presentation was attended by: the President of the UCEI, Noemi Di Segni, the Head of the Department for the education and training system, Stefano Versari, the Director of the Direction for Students, Inclusion and School Guidance Antimo Ponticiello . Also present were Ambassador Luigi Maccotta , Head of the Italian Delegation to the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance) and Matteo Mecacci Director ODIHR - OSCE (Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) who will present the teaching aids “Tackling anti-Semitism in schools - Taching Aids”.
